Financial Report and Summary

As some of you know, one of my biggest hesitations regarding Micah's adoption was the upfront financial cost.  How were we going to finance an adoption when year-over-year we had barely grown our savings?  In fact, how could we afford to spend $30,000 when we had less than half of that in our savings account?  Although Deanna kept telling me everything was going to be O.K., I was worried that we would end up financially broken after we got back from China.  I was relying on myself and putting my trust in things that I thought were in my control.

I'm going to pause here and take a moment to share something with you that I knew BEFORE God called us to adopt ... something I had forgotten.  All of the money I possess is really God's money.  I am merely a steward of that money.  You see, God granted me the job that I have, God has given me the ability to perform that job, and God wants me to use the money I earn to further His kingdom here on Earth.  I am responsible for using the money wisely and God is responsible for bringing the money in.
 
As we all know, putting trust in something we don't have any control over can be scary.  It is no wonder that Jesus speaks about money so often in the gospels.  It is no wonder why the rich young ruler went away crying when Jesus said, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” (Matthew 19:21) The fear of losing money can cripple us with anxiety and keep us from doing God's work here on Earth.  On the other hand, the love of money can lure us into doing all sorts of evil things as we turn our focus away from God and onto ourselves.
 
If you are reading this, and you have been called to adopt, I want you to know that you have NOTHING to fear.  I know that can be hard to grasp.  In fact, if you are like me, you will likely not be able to believe this truth until you take that first step of faith.  Only after you have walked in faith can you look back and see all of the good God has done in your life.  Thankfully, God had shown himself faithful to me and our family in the past many times, and I knew deep down that I could rest in the fact that He would do it again. 
 
Also, if you have been called to adopt, know that God has a heart for orphans, and He will take care of them and you!  There are many people out there, both in the church and outside of the church, who will come to YOUR rescue as you go out to rescue your child.  Our adoption journey is proof of that.  So are the journeys of the thousands of families who adopted before us and put their hope in Jesus.
 
One final note ... there were two things that ultimately got me "over the hump" and fully committed to adoption.  One thing that God did for me was ease my fears by allowing us to refinance our home.  Refinancing our home freed up a little more money each month and gave us access to more equity in our house.  This made me feel better even though I am sure God knew that we would not need to draw on that equity.  The second thing God did for me was send me some sound words of wisdom from a friend.  One day at work, this person asked me, "How much money do you need?  $30,000?  That is the cost of a new car.  $30,000 is a small amount compared to the worth of child and his future."  How could I argue with that?

Now that we've been home almost a month, we finally have a tally of all of our expenses and donations.  I am happy to report that God is good and He answered our prayers in a remarkable way.  We were able to get Micah home without taking out any long-term debt!  This is truly a blessing to our family.  We certainly have a long road ahead with more doctor's visits and surgeries to possibly follow, but for now we are content knowing that God has provided and truly moved a mountain!

The total cost of Micah's adoption totaled over $33,000, and we were able to raise over 1/3 of that cost.  In total, sixty (60) families from all walks of life gave money to support us.  Some of these people are friends, some are coworkers, and some are family.  Some live in and around Peoria, IL, while others live as far away as Chennai, India.  Our goal was to raise $12,500, and through God's grace, we raised $137 over that amount.  Thank you, thank you, thank you again to all who supported us and helped us bring Micah home!

In addition to the donations, we also raised a total of $1485 from a garage sale and will be receiving a $5000 adoption credit from Caterpillar, Inc.  That leaves us with a total bill outstanding of $14,457.  That amount will be partially offset with the federal income tax credit offered to adoptive families.

One Month!

Wow!  Time is flying by!  June 16th marked one month since Gotcha Day.  Micah is doing great!  His favorite things include: swimming, bubbles, balloons, balls, and cars.  His favorite foods are: hard boiled eggs, dumplings, noodles, chicken and cookies.  He also loves to sing!  What a joy it is to hear him sing "Jesus loves Me."  We are so thankful that we have the opportunity to share Jesus with him.  We pray that someday he knows how much Jesus loves him.  We pray that he will trust in Jesus as his Savior. 

The most asked question: How is his English coming?
He is understanding simple phrases and commands.  He also repeats a few English words and phrases (thank you, hello, bye bye, yummy yummy, all done, night night).  He can count to 10 and can almost sing his ABC's.  We still hear him mostly speak Mandarin.  It is pretty cute to hear him speak his native language and mix it with English.  The highlight in the language department has been hearing, "wo ai ni" or "I love you."  It is the best!  We are definitely seeing his trust in us and we hope that he feels so loved. 








 First time riding a bike...it was a bit rough.  He was very frustrated. 
Good thing we have the rest of the Summer to practice!



This week we have started his medical evaluations.  He has seen the pediatrician and had some diagnostic testing.  He will be seeing a specialist in a couple weeks for his medical condition and most likely more testing.  We are anticipating a surgery at some point this year, also.  We trust that God has all of the details of his care planned and that He will give the doctors wisdom for his treatment plan.

Home Sweet Home!

We are home! 

Our journey started with a 4:30am wake-up call on Friday morning.  We headed to the airport at 6am with one other family.  We flew from Guangzhou to Tokyo, Japan.  Micah did really well on that flight.  He enjoyed watching the on-demand cartoons.  We had a 2 1/2 hour layover in Japan.  Micah enjoyed playing in the airport playroom and eating McDonald's...again.

When we boarded our plane for Chicago, we quickly noticed that it had no in-seat screens.  Say what?!  How are we going to entertain him?!  Gratefully, we managed.  He did not sleep for any extended period of time, but he sat in his chair much better than we had anticipated.  He even left his seat belt on.  We landed in Chicago and spent a good amount of time going through immigration and customs.  Then, finally, Micah was a U.S. Citizen!!!  After our last security scan, we were able to walk through the doors to our family.  We had quite the welcoming crew!

 Nathan informed us he cried happy tears for the first time in his life when he saw his brother.  Both "ge ge" (big brother) and "mei mei" (little sister) are over the moon!

After the airport excitement, we headed to Carly (Deanna's sister) and Dan's house to PARTY!  We enjoyed good food (Italian beef and pasta by our request), fun and family.  The kids loved playing outside with water guns and bubble guns.  There was also a fun game of beach volleyball using the shrubs in the back yard as the net.  While there, we also celebrated Deanna's grandfather's 80th birthday.  It was a great night!  We are so thankful to our family who came to the airport and to dinner to celebrate Micah.

We ended up staying overnight in Chicago to catch up on some sleep.  We headed back to Peoria on Saturday afternoon after a swim in Papa's pool.  Since Micah's homecoming, we have been beating jet lag, bonding, having fun and loving our new addition.  We are thankful that Matt has this week off work.  He does not like to sit at home, so he has been keeping the family busy with activities.  All three kids are loving every minute of it.

We also wanted to share that Matt and the kids were welcomed home by our church family this past Sunday.  Deanna had a migraine, so she stayed home.  Our church family has been a huge part of this adoption journey.  We cannot fully express our gratitude towards everyone who has supported us through donations and prayers.  After church we received a GREAT blessing!  Groceries were delivered!  We aren't just talking eggs, milk and bread.  Pretty much anything you can think of was in overflowing bags on our kitchen floor.  A HUGE thank you to a fellow adoptive family for that wonderful gift.  We are humbled by your generosity.

God continues to gift our family with His goodness.  Three years ago, we could have never imagined having Micah as our son.  God knew.  He knows all.  He has every detail of our lives already written.  We are choosing to live our lives for Jesus.  He is the One.  The One, true God and Savior.  We cannot fully convey the transformation that He has done in us.  We fully put our trust and faith in Him alone.  Some may think that our actions are a bit crazy or irrational.  Three years ago, we would have thought the same thing.  Now, everything has changed.  He leads us on our path.  We thank God for this call to adoption.  Throughout this process we have seen God reveal more of himself to us.  We continue to grow in faith every day. 

 
Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us,  to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen. ~Ephesians 3:20-21
